VIRTUAL ROUNDTABLE: Bitcoin in the TFSA– Qualified Investments, Dealers and Tax Reform

  • Virtual via Microsoft Teams (map)

Invite Only

The Canadian Bitcoin Consortium is hosting a virtual industry roundtable on what would be required for Canadians to hold Bitcoin directly in a Tax-Free Savings Account.

Canadians can already hold TSX-listed Bitcoin ETFs in a TFSA, but Bitcoin itself is not a qualified investment under the Income Tax Act. This session will examine the tax-code and qualified-investment changes needed to permit direct holdings; the role CIRO-registered crypto asset dealers could play in custody, execution and registered-plan administration, including trustee and investor-protection requirements; and the design choices that would determine whether access is limited to Bitcoin or extended more broadly, without undermining contribution-room controls, valuation standards or TFSA integrity. The discussion is intended to produce a clear read on what is legally required, what is operationally possible, and what should not be attempted, and to develop practical recommendations for Finance, the CRA, CIRO and plan administrators.

8–10 a.m. MST | 10 a.m.–12 p.m. EST | Virtual via Microsoft Teams
