VIRTUAL ROUNDTABLE: Digital Assets and the Future of Canadian Payments

  • Virtual via Microsoft Teams (map)

Invite Only

The Canadian Bitcoin Consortium is hosting a virtual industry roundtable on how stablecoins and other digital forms of money will interact with Canada’s payments system.

Building on the Consortium’s discussion of banks, prudential treatment and issuance, this session turns to use: how regulated stablecoins and tokenized deposits should connect to existing and emerging rails, including Interac, Lynx and the Real-Time Rail; whether a CAD-denominated stablecoin has a distinct payments role once instant account-to-account settlement exists; what access issuers, payment service providers and digital-asset firms will need to banking and settlement infrastructure; how the Stablecoin Act, the Retail Payment Activities Act, Payments Canada rules and FINTRAC obligations interact when a stablecoin is used as a payment instrument; and the conditions required for merchant acceptance, wallet-to-wallet flows and cross-border interoperability without creating closed ecosystems. Convening industry, government, regulators and financial institutions in support of Canada’s position as a leading jurisdiction for digital assets, the discussion is intended to identify areas of alignment and remaining pressure points, and to develop practical recommendations as Canada’s payments and stablecoin frameworks take shape.
